Taking the Subway in NYC
The subway is the best way to navigate New York City. It’s fast, cost-effective, and connects you to almost every part of the city.
Overcoming Subway Fears
Many people hesitate to take the subway due to fear—mostly of getting lost or concerns about safety. Here are some tips to help you feel more comfortable:
Know the Layout: Understand that the Bronx is generally to the north, Brooklyn is south or east, and Queens is north and east. Knowing your direction can simplify your journey.
Use Apps: Google Maps and the MTA app provide subway directions, nearby stops, and detailed information on how to reach your destination.
Ask for Help: New Yorkers are typically friendly and willing to assist. If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to ask someone for directions. Just remember to give space to those who seem busy with headphones!
Addressing Safety Concerns
If something makes you uncomfortable while riding the subway, it’s okay to move to another car or wait for the next train. In my 28 years of taking the subway daily, I’ve encountered mostly minor annoyances, not serious issues.
Most subway crime occurs in the boroughs, far from where most visitors go. NYC is actually the safest large city in the U.S., and the odds of being a victim on the subway—especially during the day—are very low. You’re more likely to be in a car accident near home than to face crime on the subway.
